RIVERS ASSEMBLY PAUSES PROCEEDINGS AMID ALLEGED PLANS TO IMPEACH SPEAKER

Fresh uncertainty has enveloped the Rivers State House of Assembly following the abrupt shelving of a planned legislative sitting amid reports of an alleged move to impeach Speaker Martin Amaewhule.

The sudden decision, announced on Wednesday, has further intensified the protracted political crisis rocking the state, raising concerns over stability within the legislative arm of government. Although no official reason was given for the suspension of the sitting, sources within the Assembly linked the move to growing internal divisions and rumours of an impeachment plot targeting the Speaker.

The development comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between rival blocs within the House, as well as the wider political standoff involving key actors in the state’s governance structure. Lawmakers were expected to deliberate on pending legislative matters before the sitting was called off.

Political observers warn that the continued uncertainty could further paralyse legislative activities and deepen the governance challenges facing Rivers State. Many have called for dialogue and restraint among lawmakers to prevent an escalation  and allow the Assembly to resume its constitutional duties.
