BREAKING: RIVERS POLICE REPORTEDLY ARREST CERTIFIED COURTIST A HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST, WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN
Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have reportedly arrested Port Harcourt–based lawyer and human rights activist, Chetam Thierry Nwala, shortly after he appeared in court.
Nwala was said to have been taken into custody on Tuesday at UTC Junction while returning from the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt. According to sources, police officers allegedly trailed him from the court premises before effecting the arrest.
As at the time of filing this report, Nwala’s whereabouts remain unknown, as repeated calls and text messages to his mobile phone went unanswered.
A day before the incident, Nwala had disclosed via his Facebook page that the Rivers State Police Command had invited him for questioning over a petition allegedly written by Prof. Chris Wigwe, former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Rivers State University. The petition reportedly arose from Nwala’s social media posts accusing the professor of misconduct involving law students—allegations he claimed contributed to Wigwe’s removal from office.
Nwala further revealed that he had approached the Federal High Court to seek enforcement of his fundamental human rights. The matter was heard on Monday, January 20, 2026. However, before he could brief the public on the outcome of the proceedings, reports of his arrest surfaced.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, proved unsuccessful, as calls placed to her phone did not connect.
The development has triggered concern among civil rights groups and activists, who are demanding that the police immediately disclose Nwala’s whereabouts and clarify the basis for his arrest.
