COURT CONVICT, SENTENCE TO DE@TH K!LLERS OF FORMER AHOADA DPO, ANGBASHIM

The State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has convicted and sentenced to death by hanging, four out of thirteen individuals standing trial over the killing of the former Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada East Police Division, SP  Bako Amgbashin.

The court presided over by Justice Sika Aprioku also convicted and sentenced the 6th defendant, Samuel Nwadinma, to three years imprisonment for conspiracy, while the third accused was discharged and acquitted of the four counts of conspiracy, murder, membership of a secret cult group and robbery. Recall that in June 2025, the police command in Rivers said its operatives arrested two suspected cultists over the killing of Bako Angbashim. 

In September 2023, Angbashim, a superintendent of police, was killed when his team was ambushed while returning from an operation. Days later, Governor Siminalayi Fubara placed a N100 million bounty on Gift Okpara, otherwise known as 2Baba, and his gang for the murder of Angbashim.

JUDGE ORDERS SOWORE'S LAWYER TO KNEEL DOWN IN COURT

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday threatened to commit the lead defence lawyer to politician and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, Marshall Abubakar, for contempt over rudeness in court. For raising his voice in court, the judge ordered Sowore’s lawyer to “come out and kneel down” in open court. Other lawyers, however, quickly prevailed upon the judge to forgive their errant colleague. Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly making false claims against the person of President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in a post he made on his “X” and Facebook accounts. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed strong concern over a reported incident at the Federal High Court in Abuja involving Justice Mohammed Umar and a legal practitioner, Marshall Abubakar. According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday, March 16, 2026, during proceedings involving activist Omoyele Sowore.
