COURT BARS POLICE, FRSC FROM IMPOSING FINES ON MOTORISTS

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps cannot fine motorists for violating the Third Party Motor Vehicle Insurance Act without a court order.

Presiding Judge, Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa said while both agencies can enforce the law, they do not have the power to impose fines without proper legal backing. The case was filed by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju.

The judge also dismissed an objection by the police, saying records showed they were properly served and accusing them of trying to delay the case.
