JUST IN: I DIDN'T ENDORSE SENATOR OLAKA NWOGU - DR. FABEKE DOUGLAS

Dr. Fabeke Douglas has clarified that his recent engagement with Senator Olaka Nwogu should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the senator’s political ambition ahead of the 2027 Rivers South-East Senatorial election.

In a statement, Dr. Douglas said the meeting with Senator Nwogu was focused on critical issues concerning the Ogoni people, including development, welfare, the future of the people and other matters of collective interest.

He stressed that there is a clear distinction between engaging a political stakeholder on issues affecting the people and endorsing that individual’s political aspirations.

According to him, his commitment to Ogoni development transcends partisan politics, adding that engaging political actors on matters affecting the people should not automatically be interpreted as a declaration of political support.

“Let development remain development. Let endorsement remain endorsement. And let the truth remain the truth,” the statement said.

Dr. Douglas also urged media handlers and political actors to exercise restraint and responsibility in their communication, stressing the importance of presenting political developments based on facts, context and integrity rather than assumptions.

He maintained that the interests and development of Ogoni should remain above individual political ambitions.

“Ogoni is bigger than any candidate. Ogoni development is bigger than any political ambition. And the future of our people must never be reduced to political propaganda,” he stated.

The researchers said sleeping for longer was associated with a 17 per cent higher risk of dying from any cause, although the precise reasons remain unclear. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, has defended Nigeria’s petrol pricing, saying Nigerians are already benefiting from local refining despite the product being sold at a price linked to the global market. The United Kingdom has removed Nigeria and Ghana from the list of countries whose teacher-trained professionals are eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a requirement for teaching in many schools across England. The change took effect on September 9, according to the UK Department for Education (DfE). The department said overseas teaching qualifications and experience are assessed against strict requirements to ensure teachers awarded QTS meet its standards. For countries to remain eligible, they must have a national regulator capable of confirming a teacher’s professional standing and provide authenticated references. Italy is preparing to introduce new school rules that would ban face veils such as burqas and niqabs and limit the number of foreign students in each classroom, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday.  Speaking at an annual youth event organised by her Brothers of Italy party, Meloni said a measure would soon be presented to the Cabinet. Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has revealed that some Nigerians asked him to “slow down” efforts to improve electricity supply because their freezers were now working continuously.  Tegbe made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja while commissioning a 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja.  According to the Minister, some areas that previously went without electricity for months are now enjoying up to 18 hours of supply.  “Places that didn’t have light at all for three months are now having 18 hours light.
