NO LIVES LOST AS ANOTHER NAF HELICOPTER CRASH-LANDS ON BENUE FARM AFTER ANTI-KIDNAPPING OPERATION
The Nigerian Air Force has explained that a military helicopter landed on a farmland in Benue State after completing an operation against suspected kidn@ppers.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 7, in the Ogbadigbo area of the state, near the Enugu–Benue boundary.
In a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Force said the helicopter provided close air support to ground forces during an operation targeting suspected kidn@ppers. The operation disrupted the activities of the suspected criminals and supported the advance of ground troops.
The clarification followed social media reports that the helicopter had made an emergency landing in a farmland in Makurdi. The NAF said the landing was a precautionary decision made by the pilot after completing the combat mission.
“Following the successful completion of the mission, the pilot, on return to base, exercised his professional discretion to execute a precautionary landing approximately 10 nautical miles from the airfield,” the statement said.
The NAF said the decision followed established operational and safety procedures and clarified that the helicopter was not stranded and had returned safely to base.
“The helicopter has returned to base,” the Air Force stated.
Earlier, a resident, Stephen Ikpam, claimed the aircraft landed in the Utur Tse-Igboji community, Bar Council Ward, Makurdi, following what he described as a technical fault. He said residents rushed to assist the officers on board.
“By the grace of God, all lives on board were saved when a Nigerian Air Force helicopter made an emergency landing on our farmland due to a technical fault,” he said.
He added, “We all rushed to the scene to support the officers on board, and to the glory of God, they all came out alive.”
The incident came days after a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed in Ondo State, k+lling military personnel and prompting President Bola Tinubu to declare three days of national mourning.
