Reports from Beninese media indicate that a coup d’état has been unfolding in Cotonou since dawn on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

According to media outlet TchadOne, President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo neighbourhood was attacked by a group of military personnel led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri.

Later in the morning, Lieutenant Colonel Tigri appeared on national television, which is reported to be under military control, declaring himself “chairman of the military re-establishment committee.”

The situation in the capital remains extremely volatile, with reports of troop movements at several strategic locations across Cotonou. 

TchadOne promised to provide minute-by-minute updates as events continue to unfold.

No official statement has yet been released by President Talon or his government regarding the attacks.

A Federal High Court judgment delivered today, Wednesday, December 17, 2025, has officially banned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and all officers from enforcing tinted glass permit policies. The court, presided over by Justice Joe Egwu, also barred the police from harassing, arresting, detaining, or extorting motorists and citizens under the guise of implementing the policy. The injunction further restrains the police from using the Parkway Projects Account a private contractor’s account for any government business until the substantive suit is heard and determined. The order followed an application filed by Mr. Israel Joe in suit HOR/FHR/M.3/2025, represented by Mr. Kunle Edun, SAN, and other lawyers. The 2019 gubernatorial candidate, Engr. Kiadun Richard Deekae (MNSE), has officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a resignation letter dated December 12, 2025, addressed to the State Chairman and the Ward 9 Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Engr. Deekae described the decision as a difficult one, citing personal reasons which were not disclosed in the letter. Sources revealed that his move was triggered by the recent defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Engr. Deekae expressed deep appreciation to the leadership and members of the ADC for their support and commitment while working with him, wishing the party well in its future endeavors.
