JUST IN: BURKINA FASO JUNTA DETAINS 11 NIGERIAN MILITARY OFFICERS, SEIZES AIR FORCE CARGO PLANE | #RWGBLOG
The Burkina Faso junta has detained 11 Nigerian military officers and seized a cargo plane belonging to the Nigerian Air Force after it made an emergency landing in the country without authorization. The aircraft, a C-130 Hercules, was carrying two crew members and nine passengers, all Nigerian military personnel, when it entered Burkinabe airspace without clearance.
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, condemned the incident as a "violation of sovereignty" and warned that any aircraft violating its airspace would be neutralized. The AES has placed its air defense systems on maximum alert.
The incident occurred after Nigeria intervened in Benin's failed coup attempt, deploying fighter jets and ground troops to support President Patrice Talon. The AES sees this as an "unfriendly act" and an attempt to destabilize the region.
The Nigerian government has not officially commented on the incident, but analysts suggest it may be an "operational error" during a period of heightened regional activity.
