RIVERS ASSEMBLY REJECTS FUBARA'S N100,00 CHRISTMAS BONUS

The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected the ₦100,000 Christmas bonus approved by Governor Siminalayi Fubara for lawmakers, citing the absence of due process and legislative authorization.

The decision was reached during a plenary session, where members expressed concerns that the bonus was not предусмотрed for in the state’s approved budget and did not follow established financial procedures required for such disbursements.

Lawmakers maintained that while they appreciated the governor’s gesture, any financial benefit paid to the legislature must comply with constitutional provisions and receive formal approval through appropriate legislative channels.

According to the Assembly, accepting the bonus without due process could set a precedent that undermines transparency, accountability, and the separation of powers between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The House reaffirmed its commitment to upholding financial discipline and urged the executive to always engage the legislature on matters involving public expenditure.
