SUPER EAGLES CAPTAIN WILLIAM EKONG HAS ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL, BRINGING AN END TO HIS CAREER WITH NIGERIA | #RWGBLOG

Lagos, December 4, 2025 – Super Eagles captain and vice-captain of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations silver-winning team, William Troost-Ekong, has officially retired from international football with immediate effect.

The 31-year-old centre-back broke the news on Wednesday through a touching video and statement posted on his official X handle:
HONOURED. GRATEFUL. FOREVER A SUPER EAGLE 🦅🇳🇬
Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will.

Here’s to the next chapter.
Troost-Ekong, who was named Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire, ends his Nigeria career with 71 caps and 4 goals. His retirement comes just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he had been included in the provisional squad.

The PAOK Salonika defender expressed eternal gratitude to Nigerian fans and pledged continued support for the national team through his foundation and as a lifelong supporter.
Former Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has already tipped Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as a potential successor to the captain’s armband.
