The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Nyesom Wike has asked Ajibola Basiru, national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to apologise to the FCT minister within 48 hours. On Monday, Basiru asked Wike to resign his appointment and focus on what he described as an “obsession” with Rivers state politics. PRESIDENT TINUBU NOMINATES ABE AS CHAIR OF NUPRC, SEEKS SENATE CONFIRMATION

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written two letters to the Senate, seeking the appointment of Senator Abe as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).   Senator Magnus Abe, who represented Rivers South East in the Senate for two terms, is a former NNPC board member and current chairman of the National Agency of the Great Green Wall.   The President urged the Senate to approve the nominees expeditiously.   Before now, the Senate had confirmed Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).   The President's announcement was signed by Bayo Onanuga Special Adviser to the President, (Information & Strategy).

BREAKING NEWS: RIVERS STATE EXCO APPROVES N1.85 TRILLION NAIRA, 2026 BUDGET PROPOSAL

Rivers State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved a proposed ₦1.85 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year. The budget is tagged “Budget of Resilience for Growth and Development.” The approval was given on Friday, January 2, 2026, at the EXCO meeting held at Government House, Port Harcourt, and chaired by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Speaking after the meeting, the Special Adviser on Economic Matters, Prof. Peter Medee, said the budget will be used to complete ongoing projects and settle outstanding obligations of the state. He said key areas of focus include infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, youth empowerment, human capacity development, culture, tourism, and ICT.

Prophet Ekong Ituen has issued a stern warning to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stating that his tenure in office may be coming to an end due to alleged neglect of spiritual guidance. Wike says he’ll be buried politically if Fubara secures second term  Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says his political career would be ruined if Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, secures a second term. Speaking on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Okrika LGA of Rivers state, Wike said  a decision has been made on Fubara’s second term ambition. “We have made a decision as far as Tinubu is concerned. The other one [Fubara] — no way. Because if we make another mistake, then we will go and bury ourselves politically. I will not allow myself to be buried. Canada has deported 366 Nigerians between January and October 2025, reflecting a sharp increase in immigration enforcement, according to data from the Canada Border Services Agency. The records also show that 974 Nigerians are currently listed as “removal in progress” and are awaiting deportation. Nigeria ranked ninth among the top 10 countries with the highest number of removals in 2025 and is the only African country on the list. Deportations of Nigerians have fluctuated over the years, dropping from 339 in 2019 to 199 in 2022, before rising again in 2025 with an eight per cent increase compared to 2019. The removals are part of Canada’s intensified immigration crackdown, with nearly 400 foreign nationals being deported weekly. In the 2024–2025 fiscal year alone, Canada removed over 18,000 people at a cost of about $78m.
