XENOPHOBIA: FG THREATENS REVIEW OF SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESSES OVER RISING ATTACKS ON NIGERIANS
The Federal Government has warned that it may review the operations of South African-owned businesses in Nigeria if persistent x+nophobic att@cks and hara§§ment of Nigerians in South Africa continue.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, issued the warning on Thursday while addressing concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa and ongoing efforts to assist citizens willing to return home.
She said Nigeria had consistently pursued diplomatic solutions and exercised restraint despite repeated incidents involving its citizens, but noted that the country could be forced to explore other options if the situation remains unresolved.
According to the minister, more than 120 South African companies currently operate in Nigeria without facing discrimination, hara§§ment, or thr+ats to their businesses.
“There are over 120 South African companies operating in Nigeria. Nobody is asking them to provide proof of identity, and nobody is taking over their businesses or targeting their staff because they are South Africans,” she said.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu cited major South African firms with investments in Nigeria, including MTN, MultiChoice, Stanbic IBTC Holdings and Protea Hotels, stressing that any action by Nigeria would follow constitutional and legislative processes.
She revealed that South African authorities had reportedly abandoned a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Nigeria in October 2025, which was designed to establish an early warning mechanism for preventing and managing conflicts involving citizens of both countries.
The minister expressed concern that Nigerians, including those married to South Africans and raising families there, were allegedly being pressured to leave the country.
