Idum Felix, a filmmaker and media personality has appealed to the Chairman of the council, Dr. Thomas Bariere, to look into the alleged arrest and continued detention of former student union president and social media activist, Akanto Asogho.

In an open appeal addressed to the chairman of Khana LGA, Idum Felix acknowledged that disagreements, criticism and opposition are natural parts of democracy, stressing that such differences should not become grounds for denying anyone their fundamental rights.

The appeal followed reports and social media posts alleging that Akanto has remained in custody for nearly a month.

Felix questioned the circumstances surrounding the alleged detention, asking what offence Akanto is being accused of and whether he has been convicted by a court of law.

“Criticism is part of democracy. Opposition is part of politics. Disagreement is not a crime,” Idum Felix stated

He further stressed that nobody is above the law, including Akanto, the chairman's Appointee or any other citizen, but maintained that the rule of law must equally protect the rights of every individual.

According to Idum, if Akanto has committed an offence, he should be allowed to face the legal process and have his case determined by a competent court. However, if there is no lawful basis for his continued detention, he should be released.

Idum Felix also called on Dr. Bariere to demonstrate leadership by looking beyond political differences and ensuring that justice and due process prevail.

“Leadership is not only about celebrating supporters. True leadership is also about protecting the rights of those who disagree with you,” he added.

He concluded with a direct call to the Khana chairman:

“Dr. Thomas Bariere, I respectfully appeal to you, please look into this matter. Let justice take its course. Let the courts decide.”
