The President of Kagote, Chief Lesi Maol, has come under fresh criticism following his recent remarks at an Ogoni stakeholders’ meeting convened to address concerns surrounding the proliferation of youth groups in Ogoniland.
Some Ogoni youth leaders have rejected the position attributed to the Kagote president, arguing that every Ogoni youth has the constitutional right to freedom of association. They maintained that the existence of multiple youth organisations should not be viewed as an obstacle to the development of Ogoniland, provided such groups operate within the law.
One of the vocal critics of Chief Lesi Maol, Gani Topba, has also reacted to the comments, accusing the Kagote president of making derogatory remarks about Ogoni youths by allegedly describing them as hungry and calling for the disbandment of youth organisations.

Topba further argued that Ogoni youths have the right to associate with organisations of their choice, provided they do not engage in criminal activities.

Reacting to Chief Lesi Maol’s reported call for the recovery of illegal arms in Ogoniland, Topba also made allegations concerning the alleged purchase and distribution of AK-47 rifles. He called on the Kagote president to ask those allegedly connected to him to return the weapons.

Topba also made a separate personal allegation against Chief Lesi Maol, claiming that he allegedly impregnated a young woman from Khana after promising to marry her but later abandoned her.
«“Someone like Lesi Maol, who allegedly deceived a young Khana girl, impregnated her and abandoned her, and you say such a person has character?” — Gani Topba alleged.»
