LOEC CRIES OUT OVER LACK OF SUPPORT FOR KEN SARO-WIWA CANDLE NIGHT IN PORT HARCOURT
The League of Ogoni Entertainers Concept (LOEC) has appealed to Ogoni leaders and relevant organisations to support the annual Ken Saro-Wiwa Candle Night held at 25 Aggrey Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The group, alongside members of the Ogoni creative industry, staged a protest in Port Harcourt to express concerns over what it described as neglect by Ogoni leaders and other relevant bodies in supporting the event.
LOEC said it had been shouldering the responsibility of organising the candle night without adequate support, adding that its members often contribute personal funds to ensure the event holds.
The group also maintained that it is a duly registered entertainment body in Ogoniland, with the necessary certifications, and called for greater recognition and inclusion in activities relating to the commemoration.
Speaking with RwGBlog News, LOEC President, Dawix, appealed to the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) and the KAGOTE group to recognise the organisation's efforts and extend the necessary support.
“MOSOP and KAGOTE, we are your children. We have been hosting the Ken Saro-Wiwa Candle Night alone. Please, carry us along,” he said.
Meanwhile, LOEC Vice President, Tstar, alleged that some individuals attend the event to take photographs and videos before approaching Ogoni elites and international organisations for financial support, allegedly without remitting any funds to LOEC, which he described as the body responsible for organising the event.
“People have been coming to the Ken Saro-Wiwa Candle Night on Aggrey Road to take videos and solicit funds from Ogoni elites and international bodies, while we bear the cost of hosting the event ourselves without any support. Nobody should go through them; we are the authentic body,” he said.
The organisation's Media Director, Dontan, also expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as the group's continued exclusion from recognition and support since the inception of the candle night on Aggrey Road.
“We have never been carried along. We host the Ken Saro-Wiwa Candle Night on Aggrey Road, and we have to fund the event ourselves,” he said.
LOEC's appeal comes amid renewed calls for greater collaboration among Ogoni organisations, leaders and stakeholders to support initiatives commemorating the legacy of Ken Saro-Wiwa and other Ogoni activists.
