ANAMBRA NATIVE DOCTOR 'AKWA OKUKO' JAILED FOR 12 YEARS FOR AIDING INTERNET FRAUDSTERS, OTHERS

A State High Court in Awka, Anambra State, has sentenced popular native doctor, Chukwudozie Nwangwu, widely known as “Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki,” to prison over multiple criminal charges linked to rit¥al practices. Mr Nwangwu was arrested in February 2025 by operatives of Agunechemba, a local vigilante group, over allegations of preparing charms for criminals.

The Anambra State Police later slammed him with a 10-count charge bordering on rit¥al activities, robbery, conspiracy, aiding internet fra¥dsters and preparing charms for criminal purposes. Although he had earlier pleaded not guilty, he changed his plea during Friday’s proceedings.

Trial judge, Justice Jude Obiora, subsequently convicted him on counts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, while striking out counts 1, 2, 9 and 10. The court sentenced him to two years imprisonment on each of the six counts — totalling 12 years — but ruled that the terms would run concurrently, reducing the effective sentence to two years.

Justice Obiora further held that the 13 months Mr Nwangwu had already spent in detention at the Agunechemba facility would count as part of his sentence. He is therefore expected to serve the remaining 11 months at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Awka. The court also ordered the complete demolition of his controversial shrine located in Oba, Idemili South LGA, directing that the process be recorded on video.

In addition, the judge mandated that Mr Nwangwu sign an undertaking renouncing “Okite”,  an Igbo term referring to rit¥al practices involving a large pot,  and, upon release, serve as a youth ambassador to correct the narrative he allegedly promoted about wealth through illegal and rit¥al means.

He was also ordered to use his social media platforms to publicly announce that he no longer practises “Okite.” A request by the defence for him to serve his term at the Agunechemba facility was rejected, with the court insisting he must serve it at the Awka Correctional Centre due to proper correctional standards.
