The State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has convicted and sentenced to death by hanging, four out of thirteen individuals standing trial over the killing of the former Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada East Police Division, SP Bako Amgbashin.

The court presided over by Justice Sika Aprioku also convicted and sentenced the 6th defendant, Samuel Nwadinma, to three years imprisonment for conspiracy, while the third accused was discharged and acquitted of the four counts of conspiracy, murder, membership of a secret cult group and robbery. Recall that in June 2025, the police command in Rivers said its operatives arrested two suspected cultists over the killing of Bako Angbashim.

In September 2023, Angbashim, a superintendent of police, was killed when his team was ambushed while returning from an operation. Days later, Governor Siminalayi Fubara placed a N100 million bounty on Gift Okpara, otherwise known as 2Baba, and his gang for the murder of Angbashim.

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a gruesome murder that occurred in Port Harcourt. According to police reports, the incident was formally reported on March 21, 2026, by Miss Divine Anyanwu of No. 9 Aliobi Drive, Elimgbu, at the Abuloma Police Division. She stated that on March 19, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., she and her friend, identified as Special Bensington, boarded a Bolt ride from a hotel on Emmanuel Road, off Odili Road. While travelling through the Total Gospel area, also off Odili Road, the victims were allegedly ambushed by unidentified armed hoodlums believed to have trailed them from the hotel. The attackers, who were operating a tricycle, reportedly opened fire, leaving one of the victims with severe gunshot injuries. The injured victim was immediately rushed to BMH Hospital in Port Harcourt, where she later died on March 21, 2026, while receiving treatment. Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN). The court, presided over by Justice Keke Meke, also refused an application by the defence counsel seeking to quash the charges against the defendant. Turaki is to be arraigned before the court by the Nigeria Police Force, led by the Inspector General of Police, over allegations of providing false information to the police. Earlier, the matter had been assigned to a High Court sitting in Zuba. However, Turaki failed to appear in court to take his plea. Subsequently, his legal team filed a petition against the judge and requested that the case be reassigned. In his ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Meke held that there was no justification for the defendant’s absence, noting that Turaki was fully aware of the court proceedings.
