RIVERS YOUTH LEADER URGES WIKE TO BACK AMAEWHULE FOR 2027 GOVERNORSHIP

A youth leader in Rivers State, Tammy Amakiri, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to endorse the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, as the preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

Amakiri made the appeal amid growing political activities in Rivers State, where stakeholders are beginning to position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle. He commended Amaewhule’s leadership style, describing it as firm, inclusive, and focused on results.

According to the youth leader, Amaewhule’s loyalty to Wike remains a critical factor that distinguishes him as a potential successor capable of sustaining ongoing political and developmental strides in the state.

He noted that backing a candidate with proven alignment to established political leadership would help maintain stability and continuity in governance, particularly in a state known for its complex political dynamics.

The call comes at a time of heightened political realignments, as various interest groups and party loyalists seek to influence the direction of the 2027 governorship race. Wike, a former governor of the state, is widely regarded as a key political figure with considerable influence over the state’s political structure.

Observers say the endorsement reflects broader efforts by pro-Wike groups to consolidate support around trusted allies, especially amid ongoing tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licenses of forty-six (46) Microfinance Banks with effect from July 1, 2026. A statement released by the apex bank today July 1, says the revocation was approved by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, following the banks’ failure to meet the regulatory requirements for continued operation as licensed financial institutions. According to the revocation order, the action became necessary due to Insufficient assets to meet liabilities, Closure of operations without the CBN approval, Inactivity and cessation of financial intermediation, Failure to commence operations within 12 months of licence approval, and Failure to maintain minimum capital funds unimpaired by losses. The Federal Government has announced plans to discontinue the policy separating the administration of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and Senior Secondary Schools (SSS), describing it as an ineffective reform that has contributed to rising school dropout rates.
