CAMEROON PRESIDENT BIYA APPOINTS HIS SON AS VICE-PRESIDENT, HANDS HIM MILITARY COMMAND
Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, has appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President and Head of the Armed Forces.
According to a report by Arise TV on Monday, April 6, 2026, the appointment was announced in an official decree dated April 4, 2026.
According to the presidency, Franck Biya will also serve as Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence, placing him in charge of key military and security structures in the country.
The government said the decision was based on “service requirements” and in line with constitutional and defence laws. It added that the directive would take immediate effect..The development comes at a time of rising political tension in Cameroon.
President Biya, who is 92 years old, was recently sworn in for an eighth term after a disputed election. The poll has continued to generate controversy across the country.
Official results showed that Biya won with 54 percent of the vote. His main challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, secured 35 percent.
Bakary rejected the outcome. He claimed the election was marred by irregularities and insisted that he was the rightful winner. However, the government dismissed the allegations.
The Constitutional Council of Cameroon later threw out several petitions challenging the result, citing lack of evidence.
Despite the criticism, Biya described the election as satisfactory. He also praised security forces for maintaining order during protests that followed the announcement of results.
The latest appointment has drawn attention to growing concerns over power concentration. Critics say placing his son in charge of both political and military positions could affect democratic governance.
Biya has been in power since 1982, when he succeeded former president Ahmadou Ahidjo. Observers say the new role given to Franck Biya may shape future leadership in the country, as calls for reform and political balance continue to increase.
