GOVERNOR FUBARA'S ABSENCE AT LATE SENATOR MPIGI'S NIGHT OF TRIBUTE SPARKS CONCERNS

The absence of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, at the Night of Tribute organised in honour of the late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi has continued to generate political discourse across the state.

The well-attended Night of Tribute, held in Port Harcourt, drew several political leaders, traditional rulers, and associates of the deceased lawmaker who passed away in February 2026 at the age of 64. However, notable observers pointed out the conspicuous absence of the state governor.

Senator Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly and previously served as a member of the House of Representatives, was widely regarded as a grassroots politician with strong ties across the state. His death triggered an outpouring of tributes from various quarters, including from Governor Fubara himself, who had earlier described the late senator as a brother and a committed leader whose services were still needed by the people of Rivers State.

Despite the governor’s earlier condolence message, his decision to stay away from the Night of Tribute has raised eyebrows among political watchers. Many are interpreting the move within the context of the lingering political tension between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.

Sources close to the event claimed that Minister Wike and several allies were present and actively participated in the tributes, further highlighting the perceived divide.

Political analysts suggest that the governor’s absence could be seen as a missed opportunity to demonstrate unity and leadership during a period of mourning for a prominent son of Rivers State. Critics argue that such absences at major events often fuel speculation and widen existing political gaps.

However, some supporters of the governor maintain that his schedule and prior commitments may have prevented his attendance, stressing that his earlier public tribute sufficiently honoured the late senator’s memory.

As funeral arrangements for Senator Mpigi continue, stakeholders in Rivers politics are calling for greater cohesion among leaders to honour the legacies of departed statesmen without allowing political differences to overshadow collective respect.

The development comes at a time when political realignments and power dynamics in the state remain under close observation ahead of future elections.
