OVER FIVE THOUSAND ALETO YOUTHS STAGE PROTEST OVER ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT OF N2.6 BILLION, DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY OVER ADDITIONAL N100 BILLION CLAIMS.
Thousands of residents of Aleto community, including youths and other stakeholders, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, staged a massive protest over the alleged mismanagement of N2.6 billion reportedly paid to the community by Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited.
The protesters blocked the major entrance into the community, demanding transparency and accountability from community leaders and other alleged beneficiaries handling the funds.
According to the demonstrators, the money was part of equity share payments made to the community following the surrender of over 159 hectares of land to the company for industrial operations.
The protesters alleged that out of the N2.6 billion reportedly paid to the community, only N1 billion was distributed to beneficiaries, while the remaining N1.6 billion remains unaccounted for.
Community members further claimed that another alleged N100 billion linked to land compensation and benefits over the years could not be properly accounted for by leadership bodies, including ELANO Investment Ltd. and the Aleto Clan Association Trust.
Speaking during the protest, one of the demonstrators said:
“We heard that N2.6 billion was paid to the Aleto community by Indorama Petrochemical Company to be shared among members of the community. Out of the money, only N1 billion was distributed, while N1.6 billion cannot be accounted for.”
Another protester alleged that the issue has persisted for more than 14 years, accusing successive community leaders and affiliated bodies of failing to provide clear records of funds meant for landowners and beneficiaries.
The protesters said the alleged financial irregularities have left many residents in hardship despite the enormous resources generated from the community’s partnership with the company.
They called on the Nigerian government, anti-corruption agencies, and relevant stakeholders to investigate the allegations and ensure accountability, transparency, and justice for all beneficiaries and landowners in the community.
Aleto community is one of the host communities of Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited and is among the communities that ceded land for the company’s industrial and business operations.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the community leadership nor Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited had issued an official statement regarding the allegations.
