POLICE DEBUNK VIRAL KATSINA VIDEO, CLARIFY INDIVIDUALS SEEN ARE SECURITY VOLUNTEERS
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that a police officer was seen interacting with armed bandits in a viral video recorded in Katsina State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Force clarified that the individuals featured in the video are not bandits but recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters working alongside security agencies in ongoing operations across Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of the state.
According to the police, the footage captured a routine engagement between a police officer and the community security volunteers as they were heading to a designated operational area to support efforts aimed at combating criminal activities and enhancing public safety.
The Force described allegations linking the individuals to banditry as false, misleading, and malicious, stressing that the narrative was deliberately crafted to deceive the public and undermine confidence in security institutions.
The Police condemned the spread of misinformation, warning that the dissemination of false information capable of causing public panic and disrupting security operations could attract legal consequences.
The NPF urged Nigerians to disregard the claims attached to the viral video and rely only on information released through official police channels and authorized government sources.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Force said it would continue to collaborate with legitimate community-based security groups and other stakeholders in the fight against crime and the protection of lives and property across the country.
The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, on June 24, 2026.
