The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has relieved the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Oyigbo Police Division of his duties following allegations of extortion and abuse of office.
The action comes after a rights activist alleged that the officer extorted ₦500,000 from a man who was reportedly arrested and detained without any known offence. The activist, who shared evidence of the alleged payment on social media, also accused the DPO of instituting what was described as a questionable charge against a woman.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, said the removal of the officer underscores the command’s commitment to transparency, accountability and professionalism.
According to the police spokesperson, Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju directed the immediate removal of the DPO to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations.
She assured members of the public that the command would not tolerate misconduct and reiterated its resolve to uphold the rule of law and maintain public confidence in policing across the state.
The police authorities stated that further actions would be determined based on the outcome of the investigation.
