ADC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, ATIKU ABUBAKAR APPOINTS KENNETH OKONKWO AS SPOKESPERSON

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally offered Kenneth Okonkwo an appointment as his Spokesperson for the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria, following his emergence as the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a letter titled “Offer of Appointment as My Spokesperson,” Atiku expressed confidence in Okonkwo’s competence, public communication skills, integrity, political judgment, and ability to represent his public positions professionally and responsibly.

The letter states: “I am pleased to offer you an appointment as my Spokesperson for the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria, following my victory as the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), subject to the terms and conditions set out in this letter and any applicable campaign, party, legal, regulatory, and ethical requirements. This appointment reflects the confidence I repose in your competence, public communication skills, integrity, political judgment, and ability to represent my public positions in a professional and responsible manner.”

While congratulating Okonkwo on the appointment, Atiku added: “I look forward to your valuable contribution to the campaign and to the advancement of democratic engagement in Nigeria.”

The letter was signed by Atiku Abubakar, GCON, Waziri Adamawa, who served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 and is the 2027 Presidential Candidate of the ADC.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, June 22, 2026, ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters, at Kuje Correctional Centre. Justice Mohammed Umar, in a brief ruling, dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias. The court subsequently ordered Sowore’s remand pending the hearing and determination of his motion for stay of the earlier order revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant. The matter was adjourned to Wednesday, June 24, 2026, for hearing of the stay application, which was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN. ABIA GOVERNMENT BANS COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLES IN UMUAHIA, ABA, AND OHAFIA

The Abia State Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. According to a press release issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the ban was approved by Governor Alex Otti and will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026. The government said the decision is part of efforts to strengthen security, improve public safety, ease traffic congestion, and promote a more organized transportation system in the affected urban centres. The Nigeria Democratic Coalition (NDC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of denying it the access code required to upload the names of its candidates to the commission’s nomination portal. The party made the allegation as it prepares to challenge a Federal High Court judgment ordering its deregistration. Speaking on the development, the party’s National Spokesman, Osa Director, said the NDC approached INEC to obtain the access code needed for the online submission of its candidates but was unsuccessful. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licenses of forty-six (46) Microfinance Banks with effect from July 1, 2026. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major review of the scheme since it was established 53 years ago. As part of the reform, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth have been directed to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to accommodate the approved changes and pave the way for their implementation.
