"INDIGENOUS SOUTH AFRICANS DON'T EVEN NEED TO WORK; IMMIGRANTS MUST WORK FOR US LIKE IN DUBAI." - ACTIVIST PHAKEL'UMTHAKATHI

Controversial South African activist Nkosikhona Ndabandaba, popularly known as "Phakel'umthakathi" has sparked widespread criticism after proposing an unconventional economic model for South Africa.

In a recent interview addressing the country's ongoing immigration and labor debates, Ndabandaba argued that indigenous South Africans should be exempted from labor entirely and be placed on government payroll.

"We don’t even need to work. We can have these legal immigrants coming to South Africa to work for us, just like in Dubai," he stated. 

He added further that, "in the United Arab Emirates, only foreigners are working. The citizens—the owners, the indigenous people of Dubai—they don’t work. We can establish that model in South Africa."

This proposal marks a sharp turn in the country's ongoing labor debates, Shifting the focus from local employment to a state-sponsored rentier economy.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, June 22, 2026, ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters, at Kuje Correctional Centre. Justice Mohammed Umar, in a brief ruling, dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias. The court subsequently ordered Sowore’s remand pending the hearing and determination of his motion for stay of the earlier order revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant. ABIA GOVERNMENT BANS COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLES IN UMUAHIA, ABA, AND OHAFIA

The Abia State Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. According to a press release issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the ban was approved by Governor Alex Otti and will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026. The government said the decision is part of efforts to strengthen security, improve public safety, ease traffic congestion, and promote a more organized transportation system in the affected urban centres. The Nigeria Democratic Coalition (NDC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of denying it the access code required to upload the names of its candidates to the commission’s nomination portal. The party made the allegation as it prepares to challenge a Federal High Court judgment ordering its deregistration. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major review of the scheme since it was established 53 years ago. As part of the reform, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth have been directed to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to accommodate the approved changes and pave the way for their implementation.
