"THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER FOR VERY POOR PEOPLE IN NIGERIA" - PRESIDENT TINUBU'S AIDE, TOPE FASUA

Dr. Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Matters, has defended the country’s economic situation, arguing that the rising cost of food and rent is also benefiting many Nigerians. 

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Fasua said those profiting from higher prices are largely Nigerians, including farmers, traders, importers and landlords. 

“You are complaining about rising food prices. When the price of food goes up, who makes the money? Farmers make the money; traders make the money; importers make the money. They are Nigerians,” he said. 

Addressing concerns over the surge in rental costs, Fasua added that Nigerian landlords are also benefiting from the increase. 

“People complain about high rental prices. Who is making the money? Nigerian landlords! They are making money right now as we speak. So call it a 50-50. Things are not as bad as you claim,” he stated. 

His remarks come amid continued public concerns over the rising cost of living, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over increasing food prices, housing costs and other economic challenges.

CBN REVOKES OPERATING LICENCES OF 46 MICROFINANCE BANKS OVER FAILURE TO MEET REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licenses of forty-six (46) Microfinance Banks with effect from July 1, 2026. A statement released by the apex bank today July 1, says the revocation was approved by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, following the banks’ failure to meet the regulatory requirements for continued operation as licensed financial institutions. According to the revocation order, the action became necessary due to Insufficient assets to meet liabilities, Closure of operations without the CBN approval, Inactivity and cessation of financial intermediation, Failure to commence operations within 12 months of licence approval, and Failure to maintain minimum capital funds unimpaired by losses. A Federal High Court in Abuja today, July 1, sentenced one Jonathan Marcus, to de@th by hanging for the gruesome m#rder of Adebola Ezekiel (80), his former employee, and his wife, Mrs. Abiodun Ezekiel, at their residence in Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja on April 1, 2024. Following the discovery of the tragic incident, an extensive investigation by the police led to the arrest of the suspect in Obajana, Kogi State, where he had gone into hiding after he committed the crime.  During interrogation, the suspect confessed to gaining access to the residence of the deceased at about 11:00 p.m. on 1st April, 2024, where he m#rdered the couple.
