PIPELINE EXPLOSION IN ALETO: OGONI OIL AND GAS HOST COMMUNITIES YOUTH ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR DAMAGE ASSESSMENT, COMPENSATION AND MEDICAL CARE

The Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Communities Youth Association has called for an urgent assessment of damage, adequate compensation for affected persons and prompt medical care for victims following a reported pipeline explosion in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Association made the call during a visit to the affected site to assess the situation and express concern over the potential impact of the incident on residents, property and the surrounding environment.

The Association urged relevant government agencies, pipeline operators and other responsible authorities to conduct a comprehensive assessment to establish the extent of the damage and identify individuals and communities affected by the explosion.

It stressed that persons who suffered losses or injuries should receive appropriate compensation and support in line with applicable laws and established procedures. It also called for prompt medical attention for anyone injured or otherwise affected by the incident, emphasising that the welfare and safety of residents must remain a priority.

CALLS ON HOUSE COMMITTEE ON HOST COMMUNITIES TO VISIT ALETO

The Association appealed to the House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities, led by Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Robinson Dekor, to visit the affected area and obtain first-hand information about the incident.

According to the Association, such a visit would provide an opportunity to engage affected residents, relevant authorities and pipeline operators, assess the situation and identify necessary interventions to ensure accountability and support for those impacted.

The Association further stressed the importance of effective collaboration among government institutions, industry operators and host communities in addressing the consequences of pipeline incidents and preventing future occurrences.

WARNS RESIDENTS AGAINST ENCROACHMENT ON PIPELINE RIGHTS-OF-WAY

While calling for urgent assistance for affected residents, the Association also cautioned members of pipeline-hosting communities against constructing houses or erecting structures within designated pipeline rights-of-way.

It noted that respecting pipeline safety corridors is essential to reducing the risk of accidents, protecting lives and property, and preventing avoidable tragedies in oil and gas host communities.

The Association urged residents to comply with established safety regulations and encouraged relevant authorities and pipeline operators to intensify public sensitisation on pipeline safety, land-use restrictions and emergency response procedures.

ADVOCATES STRONGER PIPELINE SAFETY AND COMMUNITY PROTECTION

The Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Communities Youth Association called for sustained cooperation among government agencies, pipeline operators, community leaders and residents to strengthen safety monitoring, improve emergency response mechanisms and protect the lives and livelihoods of people living in oil-producing communities.

The Association maintained that beyond responding to the immediate consequences of the Aleto incident, all relevant stakeholders must take practical steps to improve pipeline safety, ensure responsible intervention and minimise the risk of similar incidents in the future.

It reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the interests of host communities and promoting accountability, environmental protection and the welfare of residents across Khana, Gokana, Eleme and Tai Local Government Areas of Rivers State.
