35 MILLION NIGERIANS MAY GO HUNGRY IN COMING MONTHS - UN RAISES ALARM OVER WORSENING FOOD CRISIS

The United Nations has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s growing food crisis, warning that about 35 million Nigerians could face acute hunger between June and August this year.

According to the UN Humanitarian Country Team, Nigeria is currently battling a worsening hunger emergency, with millions expected to struggle for food as the lean season approaches.

“Nearly one in seven people, that is 35 million people nationwide in Nigeria, are likely to face acute food insecurity during this year’s lean season, which runs from June to August,” the organisation stated.

The UN described Nigeria as one of the countries facing the world’s largest hunger crises, noting that northern Nigeria remains the hardest hit.

The body warned that if urgent help does not arrive soon, many families may be forced to skip meals, sell off valuable belongings, or even withdraw their children from school just to survive.

It also revealed that an estimated 6.4 million children across North-West and North-East Nigeria are expected to suffer acute malnutrition this year.

The organisation and its partners are now calling for urgent financial support to expand life-saving interventions across affected communities.

According to the latest humanitarian response report, the UN’s 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, which requires $516 million in funding, has received only about 40 per cent support so far.

As of May 2026, only $215 million had reportedly been received.

ASU EKIYE CLARIFIES CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING DIVORCE

Gospel music minister Asu Ekiye has offered clarification on the circumstances surrounding the dissolution of his 28-year marriage, following numerous calls and messages seeking to understand what led to the separation. In a statement, Ekiye explained that the decision to end the marriage was not initiated by him, but by his wife, who, according to him, expressed her desire to end the relationship, moved out of their home and subsequently commenced divorce proceedings. He stated that for about a year after the separation, he made several efforts and appeals towards reconciliation, hoping that the marriage could be preserved. President Bola Tinubu has ordered the arrest of one George Buchi Nwabueze and suspended three permanent secretaries after the anti graft agency ICPC uncovered another fake agency operating within the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
