BREAKING NEWS: FEDERAL HIGH COURT IN ABUJA SENDS SOWORE TO KUJE CORRECTIONAL CENTER
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, June 22, 2026, ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters, at Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Mohammed Umar, in a brief ruling, dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias. The court subsequently ordered Sowore’s remand pending the hearing and determination of his motion for stay of the earlier order revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant.
The matter was adjourned to Wednesday, June 24, 2026, for hearing of the stay application, which was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN.
Sowore arrived at the court accompanied by supporters carrying placards.
Justice Umar had on June 16, 2026, revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest following his failure to appear in court. The order was made upon an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN.
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore on charges of criminal defamation and alleged cybercrime for referring to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal” in posts on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.
The case continues to attract significant public interest amid concerns over free speech and political expression in Nigeria.
