KWARA COMMUNITY RAISES N60 MILLION, FOOD SUPPLIES TO SECURE RELEASE OF ABDUCTED FAMILY AFTER FOUR MONTHS IN CAPTIVITY

Residents of Awun community in the Oro-Ago district of Kwara State have reportedly raised N60 million to secure the release of three members of a family who were ad¥cted about four months ago.

The Guardian gathered that the ransom was raised through donations from residents and Awun indigenes living abroad. In addition to the cash, the k+dnappers reportedly demanded and received two 50kg bags of rice, a 20-litre container of groundnut oil, a carton of spaghetti, 10kg of semovita, assorted alcoholic drinks, Maggi seasoning, and other food items.

A community source said the appeal for donations was circulated on the community’s WhatsApp platform, where residents and those in the diaspora coordinated support.
The victims were reportedly k+dnapped from their home in February while their father, Olajide Buraimoh, was away.

The pregnant woman among the ad¥ctees regained her freedom last week, while the two minors, aged between four and 15, were released on Monday after the community completed payment of the ransom.

“The victims went through severe hardship during their captivity,” the source said, adding that the k+dnappers kept the children even after freeing the pregnant woman.

Speaking from Ilorin, another resident, Fijabi Ismail, lamented the worsening security situation in the area.

“Our situation in Awun is pitiable. Only God can save us,” he said.
“We received the news yesterday evening that the children had been released. It is a great relief, but the financial burden on the community has been enormous.”

SENATE BACKS FRSC BILL WITH N100,000 FINE AND TRAFFIC LIGHT VIOLATIONS, N50,000 FOR PREACHING IN BUSES

The Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing significantly tougher penalties for traffic offences across the country. Under the amendment, anyone convicted of “failure to obey traffic lights, road signs, pavement or road markings” will be liable to a N100,000 fine. The bill also prescribes a N50,000 fine for anyone found “hawking, trading or preaching” inside commercial buses. The proposed law further raises the penalty for driving under the influence of alcoh%l or intox+cating dr¥gs from N5,000 to N100,000, with offenders also facing up to two years’ imprisonment or both upon conviction. Motorists who refuse to cooperate with FRSC officials during roadside breath tests conducted on reasonable suspicion will also face a N50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both. SUPREME COURT ORDERS FINAL FORFEITURE OF EMEFIELE'S LUXURY PROPERTIES

The Supreme Court on Friday, July 17, 2026 affirmed the final forfeiture of seven landed properties, the sum of $2,045,000 (Two Million, Forty-Five Thousand United States Dollars) and share certificates linked to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
