RIVERS STATE POLICE DISMISSES OFFICERS OVER ALLEGED K!LL!NG OF ANTHONY OBODO

The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed the officers allegedly involved in the shooting and killing of Anthony Obodo.

The affected officers were paraded by the Command today following investigations into the incident.

They are also reportedly set to be charged to court to face prosecution over their alleged involvement in Obodo’s death.

The development is expected to provide a major step towards accountability and justice as authorities continue to address the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 101-year-old great-grandmother for dealing in illicit drugs and also intercepted cocaine concealed in edible cassava flour popularly known as fufu. In a rare and startling development, NDLEA operatives on Saturday, August, arrested a 101-year-old woman, Esther Ogunmabo, in Ilisan, Ogun state, with retail sachets of skunk, a strain of cannabis weighing 90 grams, which she claims she sells to locals. The centenarian told operatives that she resorted to the illicit drug trade after her provisions shop was razed by fire, adding that one of her daughters, who resides in Lagos, arranges the supply of the substance to her every four days, which she in turn sold in bits. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has, however, directed that the suspect be granted bail and placed on counselling because of her advanced age, while her daughter has been arrested.

The Nigerian Navy's FOB Formoso has arrested wanted militant kingpin Sunday Godlaw and his associate Prosper Tumbe at Opugbene, Akassa, Brass LGA, recovering an AK-47 rifle, three loaded magazines and a phone. Godlaw had been on the run since Navy operatives raided his camp at Fununu Community on August 6. Acting on fresh intelligence, troops tracked him down on Saturday, August 22. Preliminary interrogation revealed the duo's alleged confessions to terrorism, kidnapping, and killings that had left neighbouring communities living in fear. CO of FOB Formoso, Capt. S.K. Haruna, praised his men for the operation and confirmed search efforts continue for other fleeing gang members. Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

WHATSAPP TO START CHARGING NIGERIA BUSINESSES FROM OCTOBER 2026

Businesses using Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform will begin paying for certain customer messages from October 1, 2026, following a new pricing structure announced by the company. The new policy applies primarily to organisations that use the WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API, to handle customer communications at scale. However, regular WhatsApp users and small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app are not the primary targets of the new charges. Under the revised pricing model, fees will vary depending on the type of message businesses send to customers. Utility messages, such as payment notifications, order confirmations and other service-related updates, will cost approximately $0.0101 per message. A coalition of six opposition political parties has proposed the creation of a “government of national competence” that would serve a single four-year transition term if the coalition succeeds in the 2027 general election. The proposal was presented on Monday at a summit of opposition political parties organised by G100 in Abuja. The parties represented at the summit were the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP). King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has d+ed at the age of 34. The monarch, who ascended the throne at just three years old in 1995 following the de@th of his father, passed away on Thursday, according to Tooro Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. The cause of de@th was not disclosed. However, local media quoted an Ugandan government minister as saying King Oyo had been critically ill and receiving medical treatment in the United States. The Ogoni Dialogue Committee, ODC, has denied claims that it influenced the allocation of 40 job slots at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, or played any role in the award of government contracts. Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt, ODC Chairman, Professor Don Baridam, said the 40 employment opportunities were proposed as part of confidence-building measures in the Ogoni dialogue with the Federal Government. He, however, stressed that the committee neither selected nor recruited the beneficiaries, saying NNPCL relied on its existing recruitment database to identify qualified Ogoni applicants. Professor Baridam acknowledged that some ODC members submitted names for consideration but said the nominations did not determine the final selection. The committee also rejected claims of involvement in government or NNPCL contract awards, saying such matters were outside its mandate.
