MAN SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR ABANDONING HIS PREGNANT SECONDARY SCHOOL GIRLFRIEND IN ADAMAWA

An Upper Area Court in Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State has sentenced Kabiru Umar to five years in prison after he admitted to abandoning his pregnant secondary school girlfriend despite initially accepting responsibility for the pregnancy. 

The case was filed by the girl’s father, Mohammed Njidda, and the victim through their lawyer, Abdulrahman Njidda, who accused the defendant of neglecting the girl after impregnating her. 

According to the court, the convict had approached the girl’s father to seek her hand in marriage without disclosing that she was already pregnant. Although he initially accepted responsibility, he later stopped providing financial and medical support, prompting legal action. 

After pleading guilty, the court sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine. 

In addition to the sentence, the court ordered him to pay ₦73,000 for medical bills, feeding and antenatal care, ₦100,000 for nutritional support, ₦200,000 to cover the complainant’s legal expenses, and a monthly maintenance fee of ₦20,000 to the victim until she gives birth or until a competent court decides otherwise. 

The court further directed the convict to continue taking full responsibility for the pregnancy and all related medical needs until delivery. 

Delivering the judgment, the presiding judge said the ruling was meant not only to punish the offender but also to serve as a warning that anyone who impregnates and abandons a girl will be held accountable under the law.
