SOUTH-EAST GOVERNORS WILL SUPPORT PRESIDENT BOLA TINUBU'S RE-ELECTION IN 2027." - GOVERNOR UZODINMMA

Imo State Governor and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, says the five South-East governors have resolved to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, citing the Federal Government’s developmental projects in the region.

Speaking in Owerri during a meeting with traditional rulers and members of the Imo State Elders Council, Uzodimma said the decision was reached despite the governors belonging to different political parties.

“The South-East has decided. Our people judge governments by performance and not by political sentiments. The evidence is on the ground,” he said.

He disclosed that the governors would soon pay a joint courtesy visit to President Tinubu to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government.

Uzodimma also cautioned politicians against using Igbo platforms to spread what he described as unfounded propaganda, saying, “The Igbos are too discerning and too results-driven to trade tangible infrastructure for political speeches. The South-East will stand with Tinubu’s administration that has favoured them.”

He said the decision was based on projects and policies such as the South East Development Commission (SEDC), rail and road infrastructure, increased state allocations, the student loan scheme, security initiatives and fiscal reforms.

On Imo politics, the governor urged support for the Charter of Equity, saying, “The Charter of Equity is real, and I need your mandate to implement it because that is what will bring lasting peace to Imo State.”

He insisted his successor must emerge in line with the charter, adding, “I will take the fight personally to protect the Charter of Equity. I will stop at nothing.”

SENATE BACKS FRSC BILL WITH N100,000 FINE AND TRAFFIC LIGHT VIOLATIONS, N50,000 FOR PREACHING IN BUSES

The Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing significantly tougher penalties for traffic offences across the country. Under the amendment, anyone convicted of “failure to obey traffic lights, road signs, pavement or road markings” will be liable to a N100,000 fine. The bill also prescribes a N50,000 fine for anyone found “hawking, trading or preaching” inside commercial buses. The proposed law further raises the penalty for driving under the influence of alcoh%l or intox+cating dr¥gs from N5,000 to N100,000, with offenders also facing up to two years’ imprisonment or both upon conviction. Motorists who refuse to cooperate with FRSC officials during roadside breath tests conducted on reasonable suspicion will also face a N50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested and detained four police officers for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja. Briefing journalists on Monday, FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi described the officers as “th+eves” who had no business wearing the police uniform. Sanusi said investigations showed the officers abandoned their designated duty posts, converged around the Banex area of Wuse, mounted an unauthorized checkpoint, and extorted the ICPC chairman without knowing his identity. SUPREME COURT ORDERS FINAL FORFEITURE OF EMEFIELE'S LUXURY PROPERTIES

The Supreme Court on Friday, July 17, 2026 affirmed the final forfeiture of seven landed properties, the sum of $2,045,000 (Two Million, Forty-Five Thousand United States Dollars) and share certificates linked to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to the Federal Government of Nigeria. PRES. TRUMP INTRODUCES NEW RULE TO LIMIT THE LENGTH OF FOREIGN STUDENTS' STAY

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced new visa rules that will limit how long foreign students, exchange visitors and journalists can stay in the United States.  Under the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy, most international students and exchange visitors will be allowed to stay for a maximum of four years, while foreign journalists will receive visas valid for up to 240 days. Chinese journalists will be limited to 90 days.  Anyone wishing to remain beyond the approved period must apply for an extension or leave the U.S. and reapply.
