"MARRIAGE SHOULDN'T TAKE AWAY YOUR INDEPENDENCE; MARRIED WOMEN SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO GO ON A GIRLS 'TRIPS" - TONI TONE
Author and social media personality Toni Tone has argued that marriage should not mean giving up personal freedom, friendships or experiences outside the relationship.
Speaking in a video, Toni said she disagreed with the idea that married women should only travel with their husbands and should stop going on trips with their friends.
According to her, people often forget that marriage is meant to add partnership to an individual's life rather than place restrictions on their existing lifestyle.
She noted that before marriage, people typically have friends, hobbies and interests outside their relationships, and questioned why those aspects of their lives should suddenly disappear after getting married.
Toni, who is married, said she enjoys spending time and travelling with her husband but believes marriage should not prevent her from going out with her friends or travelling with her sister.
She stressed that maintaining friendships and having experiences outside the marriage does not mean being disloyal to one's partner.
According to her, the same loyalty, honesty and trustworthiness expected during dating should continue after marriage, while both partners should still be allowed to maintain a life outside the relationship.
She also clarified that allowing married people to travel with friends does not mean encouraging them to behave inappropriately while away from their spouses.
Toni concluded that while some people may genuinely prefer travelling only with their partners, it is unreasonable to make the loss of independent experiences a requirement of marriage.
