NFF PRESIDENT IBRAHIM GUSAU, 7 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS RESIGN AMID MOUNTING PRESSURE OVER NIGERIAN FOOTBALL CRISIS

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, and several members of the federation’s executive committee have reportedly resigned amid growing concerns over the administration and performance of Nigerian football.

According to reports, eight of the 13 members of the NFF board have stepped down, raising questions about the federation’s leadership and the status of its scheduled September 27 elections in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The reported resignations come after a series of disappointing results involving Nigeria’s national teams, with the latest setback being the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons, who had featured in every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991, lost 2-1 to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a qualification playoff after failing to secure automatic qualification.

The NFF has also faced scrutiny over the management of funds released by the Federal Government for the national teams. The Guardian reported that the Department of State Services (DSS) was examining documents relating to a ₦17 billion intervention fund approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024 to clear outstanding wages, bonuses and other obligations owed to national team players.

A source described the DSS review as a routine examination of documents rather than a witch-hunt, saying it was normal for the agency to scrutinise funds released for such purposes.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for successive FIFA World Cup tournaments has further intensified criticism of the federation’s leadership.

The reported departure of more than half of the board could have significant implications for the NFF, particularly with its elections approaching. The development also comes shortly after the resignation of former NFF fact-finding committee chairman, Fanny Amun.

The NFF is yet to officially clarify the full extent of the reported resignations or announce how the federation will be managed amid the ongoing crisis.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the arrest of one George Buchi Nwabueze and suspended three permanent secretaries after the anti graft agency ICPC uncovered another fake agency operating within the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 101-year-old great-grandmother for dealing in illicit drugs and also intercepted cocaine concealed in edible cassava flour popularly known as fufu. In a rare and startling development, NDLEA operatives on Saturday, August, arrested a 101-year-old woman, Esther Ogunmabo, in Ilisan, Ogun state, with retail sachets of skunk, a strain of cannabis weighing 90 grams, which she claims she sells to locals. The centenarian told operatives that she resorted to the illicit drug trade after her provisions shop was razed by fire, adding that one of her daughters, who resides in Lagos, arranges the supply of the substance to her every four days, which she in turn sold in bits.
