RIVERS STATE ASSEMBLY REJECTS N6 BILLION NAIRA ALLOCATED TO PAMO UNIVERSITY

The Rivers State House of Assembly has reportedly rejected the ₦6 billion allocation proposed for PAMO University in the state’s 2027 budget, raising questions over the decision to commit such a substantial amount of public funds to a privately owned tertiary institution.

The Assembly is demanding explanations from the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and the state executive over the rationale behind the allocation. Lawmakers are seeking clarification on the purpose of the proposed funding and the justification for allocating such a significant sum to a private university.

The development signals what appears to be a more assertive stance by the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly in its scrutiny of the state’s spending plans. The rejection and demand for clarification could further fuel discussions over accountability, fiscal responsibility and the proper use of public funds in Rivers State.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has, however, directed that the suspect be granted bail and placed on counselling because of her advanced age, while her daughter has been arrested.

The incident is said to have occurred around midnight on Thursday in Okrika Local Government Area, where a vessel was reportedly being loaded with petroleum products for export. Sources familiar with the incident said the victims were allegedly engaged in the unauthorised siphoning of fuel when they inhaled poisonous fumes from the petroleum products. WHATSAPP TO START CHARGING NIGERIA BUSINESSES FROM OCTOBER 2026

Businesses using Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform will begin paying for certain customer messages from October 1, 2026, following a new pricing structure announced by the company. The new policy applies primarily to organisations that use the WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API, to handle customer communications at scale. However, regular WhatsApp users and small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app are not the primary targets of the new charges.
