JIGAWA LG CHAIRMAN EMPOWERS RESIDENTS WITH SINGLE ROOFING SHEETS


A local government chairman in Jigawa State has generated widespread reactions after reports and images circulating on social media allegedly showed residents receiving one roofing sheet each as part of an empowerment programme.

According to the reports, beneficiaries were presented with a single roofing sheet during the distribution exercise, a development that has attracted mixed reactions from Nigerians online.

While some social media users questioned the value and purpose of distributing only one roofing sheet per person, describing the initiative as inadequate, others argued that the programme may have been designed to reach a larger number of beneficiaries or to complement other forms of assistance.

The Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State has renewed its call for transparency, accountability and justice over funds allegedly allocated to landowners and host communities connected to Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals, Fertiliser and Super-Packaging companies. Aleto is one of the six host communities to Indorama Eleme. The community says it donated about 159 hectares of land out of approximately 369 hectares used for the development of the company, with the land forming part of the equity arrangement involving the host communities. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 101-year-old great-grandmother for dealing in illicit drugs and also intercepted cocaine concealed in edible cassava flour popularly known as fufu. In a rare and startling development, NDLEA operatives on Saturday, August, arrested a 101-year-old woman, Esther Ogunmabo, in Ilisan, Ogun state, with retail sachets of skunk, a strain of cannabis weighing 90 grams, which she claims she sells to locals. The centenarian told operatives that she resorted to the illicit drug trade after her provisions shop was razed by fire, adding that one of her daughters, who resides in Lagos, arranges the supply of the substance to her every four days, which she in turn sold in bits. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has, however, directed that the suspect be granted bail and placed on counselling because of her advanced age, while her daughter has been arrested.
