SEVERAL FOREIGN NATIONALS, NIGERIANS ARRESTED IN CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL MINING IN NASARAWA

Several foreign nationals and Nigerian citizens have been arrested over their alleged involvement in illegal mining in Amba Community, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. 

The suspects were arrested on Friday, July 17, during a security operation led by the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe, as part of efforts to curb illegal mining and strengthen compliance in the solid minerals sector. 

During the raid, security operatives recovered cartons of suspected illegally mined minerals and seized equipment, including CCTV cameras allegedly used to monitor activities and evade security surveillance. 

Akabe said the operation reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the state’s mineral resources, tackling illegal mining, and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s mining laws. 

The suspects will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution if found culpable.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has, however, directed that the suspect be granted bail and placed on counselling because of her advanced age, while her daughter has been arrested.

WHATSAPP TO START CHARGING NIGERIA BUSINESSES FROM OCTOBER 2026

Businesses using Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform will begin paying for certain customer messages from October 1, 2026, following a new pricing structure announced by the company. The new policy applies primarily to organisations that use the WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API, to handle customer communications at scale. However, regular WhatsApp users and small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app are not the primary targets of the new charges. Under the revised pricing model, fees will vary depending on the type of message businesses send to customers. King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has d+ed at the age of 34. The Ogoni Dialogue Committee, ODC, has denied claims that it influenced the allocation of 40 job slots at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, or played any role in the award of government contracts. Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt, ODC Chairman, Professor Don Baridam, said the 40 employment opportunities were proposed as part of confidence-building measures in the Ogoni dialogue with the Federal Government. He, however, stressed that the committee neither selected nor recruited the beneficiaries, saying NNPCL relied on its existing recruitment database to identify qualified Ogoni applicants. Professor Baridam acknowledged that some ODC members submitted names for consideration but said the nominations did not determine the final selection.
