"WE'VE REDUCED IMPUNITY AMONG POLICEMEN TO THE BAREST MINIMUM" - IGP TUNJI DISU


Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu has stated that the Nigeria Police Force has made significant progress in reducing cases of misconduct and abuse of power among its personnel, saying public complaints against officers have declined considerably.

Speaking during a public engagement, the police chief said the level of complaints received by the Force today is far lower than when he assumed office, describing the improvement as evidence of ongoing reforms within the institution.

According to him, complaints of unprofessional conduct by police officers were widespread when he took over leadership of the Force, but such reports have reduced substantially due to measures introduced to strengthen accountability.

Disu credited the improvement to the effectiveness of the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU), explaining that the unit remains open and accessible to members of the public through several communication channels.

He noted that Nigerians can report cases of police misconduct through the CRU's official platforms on X, Instagram and Facebook, adding that every genuine complaint is investigated and feedback is provided to the complainant.

The IGP said the Force has prioritised professionalism and accountability, stressing that efforts to curb impunity among police personnel have produced positive results.

He maintained that disciplinary mechanisms within the Force have helped reduce acts of misconduct to what he described as "the barest minimum," while reaffirming the commitment of the police leadership to uphold ethical standards.

Disu also encouraged Nigerians to promptly report any form of wrongdoing involving police officers rather than remaining silent, assuring citizens that the Force is committed to investigating credible allegations and taking appropriate action where necessary.

He reiterated that public cooperation remains essential to sustaining ongoing reforms and strengthening trust between the Nigeria Police Force and the communities it serves.

SENATE BACKS FRSC BILL WITH N100,000 FINE AND TRAFFIC LIGHT VIOLATIONS, N50,000 FOR PREACHING IN BUSES

The Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing significantly tougher penalties for traffic offences across the country. Under the amendment, anyone convicted of “failure to obey traffic lights, road signs, pavement or road markings” will be liable to a N100,000 fine. The bill also prescribes a N50,000 fine for anyone found “hawking, trading or preaching” inside commercial buses. The proposed law further raises the penalty for driving under the influence of alcoh%l or intox+cating dr¥gs from N5,000 to N100,000, with offenders also facing up to two years’ imprisonment or both upon conviction. Motorists who refuse to cooperate with FRSC officials during roadside breath tests conducted on reasonable suspicion will also face a N50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced new visa rules that will limit how long foreign students, exchange visitors and journalists can stay in the United States.  Under the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy, most international students and exchange visitors will be allowed to stay for a maximum of four years, while foreign journalists will receive visas valid for up to 240 days. Chinese journalists will be limited to 90 days.  Anyone wishing to remain beyond the approved period must apply for an extension or leave the U.S. and reapply. The Supreme Court on Friday, July 17, 2026 affirmed the final forfeiture of seven landed properties, the sum of $2,045,000 (Two Million, Forty-Five Thousand United States Dollars) and share certificates linked to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to the Federal Government of Nigeria. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested and detained four police officers for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja. Briefing journalists on Monday, FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi described the officers as “th+eves” who had no business wearing the police uniform.
