BREAKING NEWS: POLICE ARREST 27-YEAR-OLD WOMAN OVER FAKE OPAY SHUTDOWN NOTICE

The police have reportedly arrested a 27-year-old woman in connection with a fake notice claiming that OPay would shut down its operations in Nigeria.

The false message circulated widely on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, reportedly urging OPay customers to withdraw their funds ahead of an alleged shutdown of the fintech company.

The development has raised concerns over the spread of misleading financial information online, particularly messages that could cause panic among customers and potentially expose them to scams.

Authorities have urged members of the public to verify financial announcements through the official communication channels of banks and fintech companies before acting on or forwarding such messages.

The arrest forms part of efforts to trace those behind the circulation of the false information and determine whether the message was intended to cause financial panic or facilitate fraudulent activities.

The incident also highlights the need for Nigerians to be cautious when receiving urgent messages concerning their bank or fintech accounts, especially those requesting immediate withdrawals, transfers or other financial actions.

Vanguard reported that the fake OPay shutdown notice had circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
