OGONI OIL AND GAS HOST COMMUNITIES YOUTH ASSOCIATION CALLS ON OGONI DIALOGUE COMMITTEE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PEOPLE
The Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Communities Youth Association has called on the Ogoni Dialogue Committee to demonstrate transparency and accountability by immediately briefing the people of Ogoniland on the outcome of its meeting held in Abuja on September 9, 2026.
As critical stakeholders who live with the direct and lasting consequences of oil and gas activities, we believe the people of Ogoniland have the right to know what was discussed, the decisions reached, and any agreements or understandings arising from the Abuja meeting.
The Association therefore demands that the full details and outcome of the meeting be made public without further delay.
Furthermore, we strongly reject the exclusion of the Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Communities Youth Association from the ongoing dialogue concerning the possible resumption of oil and gas exploration and related activities in Ogoniland.
It is unacceptable that young people from the host communities—who continue to bear the consequences of environmental degradation, polluted water, contaminated land, health challenges and the destruction of livelihoods associated with oil and gas activities—are excluded from discussions concerning the future of their environment, resources and communities.
Any dialogue process that claims to represent the interests of Ogoniland while deliberately sidelining the youth of the host communities risks losing the confidence and trust of the very people it seeks to represent.
We insist that any genuine dialogue must be broad-based, transparent and inclusive. The voices of those living with the daily realities of environmental degradation must be heard and given meaningful representation in every discussion concerning the future of oil and gas activities in Ogoniland.
We therefore call on the Ogoni Dialogue Committee to:
1. Immediately brief the public on the full details and outcome of the Abuja meeting held on September 9, 2026.
2. Ensure the meaningful inclusion and representation of the Ogoni Oil and Gas Host Communities Youth Association in all subsequent stages of the dialogue process.
3. Guarantee transparency and accountability in all discussions and decisions concerning the possible resumption of oil and gas activities in Ogoniland.
Anything short of transparency, accountability and genuine inclusion will only deepen distrust and undermine efforts toward achieving lasting peace, justice and sustainable development in Ogoniland.
Signed:
Comr. Teddy Gianen
