HISTORY MADE: DR. CELESTINE AKPOBARI BUILDS FIRST KEN SARO-WIWA LEGACY HALL IN KAANI, OGONILAND

History Was Made In Bua Kaani as the Renowned environmental activist Dr. Nnimmo Bassey officially commissioned the Ken Saro-Wiwa Legacy Hall in Kaani, a landmark facility built by Comrade Celestine AkpoBari PhD, Founder, Miideekor Development Initiative to strengthen the struggle for environmental justice in the Niger Delta.

The inauguration was the highlight of the 2026 Wisdom Gathering, hosted at the newly established Miideekor Ecological Knowledge and Action Centre by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation.

In a show of royal and community support, His Royal Highness, Mene Barikpoa Godwin Apere was fully present to receive the environmental giant, an Icon, Rev Nnimmo Bassey and to witness the commissioning of the Miideekor ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND ACTION CENTRE,  KAANI.  His presence underscored the role of traditional leadership in safeguarding land, culture, and the environment.

The event also featured the unveiling of the Nnimmo Bassey War Room for Ecological Research and Action, a dedicated space for strategic research, grassroots organizing, and community-led advocacy.

The gathering brought together environmental advocates, researchers, community stakeholders, and residents of Bua Kaani and neighboring communities. Discussions centered on addressing ecological degradation, campaigning for environmental justice, and preserving indigenous knowledge systems that have sustained the region for generations.

Wisdom Session Focuses on Indigenous Knowledge. Following the ribbon-cutting, participants assembled inside the Ken Saro-Wiwa Legacy Hall for a lecture and interactive session.

Delivering the keynote, HRC Magnus Edoo spoke on “Ecosystem Restoration: The Role of Indigenous Languages and Philosophies in Achieving Ecological Justice.”
He emphasized that lasting restoration must be rooted in local languages, traditional wisdom, and the lived experiences of frontline communities, not just imported models.

The commissioning of a facility of this scale is already reshaping life in Bua Kaani.

For the first time, the community now has: A permanent hub for learning where youths, farmers, and women can access training on sustainable agriculture, pollution monitoring, and climate adaptation.

A research and documentation centre to record indigenous practices, oral histories, and ecological data that can inform policy and legal advocacy.

A safe convening space for town halls, inter-community dialogue, and strategic planning without having to travel to Port Harcourt.

New opportunities for youth through workshops, fellowships, and partnerships that link local knowledge to funding, media, and policy platforms.

Community members described the halls as “a home for our struggle and our memory.” By naming one hall after Ken Saro-Wiwa and dedicating a research war room to Dr. Bassey, the centre connects present-day action to the sacrifices that defined the Niger Delta movement.

By honoring icons like Ken Saro-Wiwa and Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, the 2026 Wisdom Gathering ended with a renewed commitment: to empower local communities and use indigenous knowledge as the foundation for restoring damaged ecosystems across the region.

The Miideekor Ecological Knowledge and Action Centre is expected to serve as a model for other frontline communities seeking to combine tradition, science, and advocacy for long-term environmental recovery.
